GENSETS
Differences between electric generators and gensets
¿What is a genset?
It is a machine that moves generators through an internal combustion engine. The engine is powered by diesel, the engine's power is transformed by an alternator inside a flow, which in turn is distributed to buildings that are connected to the grid.
When do we use genset and electric generators?
They are used at homes or offices where the grid is not possible. Electric generators are used to produce the required power.
Genset/ Electric Generator, advantages:
- They need less maintenance and repairs.
- They can produce a continuous flow of power.
Why is it important to purchase a genset or an electric generator?
- Since gensets are powered by diesel, they last a long period of time, which would not be the case if they were powered by other fuel such as natural gas, gasoline or propane. Electric generators maintenance is cheap when they are powered by diesel, but it is much expensive if they were powered by gasoline or natural gas.
- When the engine uses the electric generator, there are no flammable liquids. Therefore, if the engine warms-up, there would be no danger of fire.
- Natural gas, propane and gasoline are highly flammable and thus dangerous. Instead, gensets are more reliable, because they compress the fuel and the engine of natural gas powered electric generators has to be switched on or there has to be a spark.
How is the maintenance of an electric generator or a genset?
- The worst enemy of electric generators and gensets is the humidity, because water properties create combustion and speed up detonation process.
- According to most manufacturers, electric generators maintenance requires half an hour per week.
- The filter of air have to be changed. Moreover, electric generators have to be always very clean, otherwise they do not operate correctly. It is important to verify the filter of air every 100 hours or every 50 hours in corrosive environments.
What is the function of genset's electrical controller?
- It is used to protect and control the engine. Most controllers are digital and sometimes it is also important to keep in mind their size and weight. These controllers offer protection and safety either to the engine and genset.
